As a design-build contractor, Globaltech was responsible for designing and constructing the filter improvements at the Fort Pierce Utility Authority (FPUA) Lime Softening Plant.
The existing ten (10) sand filters were between 35-53 years old and had never been rehabilitated. Under two consecutive projects, the sand filters were converted to dual-media sand/anthracite filters. Work included replacing the underdrain Wheeler Balls in three (3) filters and drilling out the orifice holes in the Leopold Clay Tile Underdrains in the remaining filters; abrasive blasting filter walls and coating them with an NSF epoxy, replacing the surface wash piping, nozzles and agitator arms, significant concrete repair work including crack injection and hole repairs; installation of new sand/anthracite/gravel, installation of two (2) new 125 HP variable speed backwash pumps, replacement of all the pneumatically actuated valves with electrically actuated valves; inspection services and concrete repair work inside the clearwell; installation of a new control system and associated electrical and instrumentation. In addition, several deteriorated wall pipes had to be cut-out, replaced and recast in the concrete.
A key component of this project is frequent coordination with the Owner to keep half of the facilities operational while work is progressing. The project is currently under construction.
