MIEX Regeneration Modifications

In the second year of the MIEX process facility’s operation, Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department (PBCWUD) elected to make various improvements and operational enhancements that would ultimately improve reliability, increase redundancy, and increase capacity of selected subsystems.

Working under a continuing design-build contract with PBCWUD, Globaltech served as the Prime Design-Build entity and self-performed over 80% of the work.

Working with subcontractors Hillers Electrical Engineering and Energy Efficient Electric, we completed the following improvements:

  • Received, site assembled, and installed a working third MIEX system skid
  • Installed new Regen recirculation pump with VFD, piping, and valve train
  • Replaced two existing tank-mounted air compressors with three larger capacity stand-alone rotary units and separate larger capacity air receiver
  • Removed and replaced the existing Brine Waste tank with a larger capacity unit. We also extended the height of the existing containment wall to accommodate a larger Brine Waste tank, and relocated the Brine Waste recirculation pump
  • Constructed new access platform above the new MIEX skid and tied it into the existing elevated platform
  • Installed various metering and instrumentation as well as new power and control panels, integrating it into the plant site SCADA system
  • Installed a new ventilation system in the existing process equipment building

Project Achievements / Benefits

  • Maintaining the existing system on line and in production mode was critical throughout construction, requiring close coordination with on-site staff. Major shutdowns were carefully scheduled and, where necessary, conducted during nighttime hours.
  • Globaltech delivered the project within the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) and critical schedule.
